The Official Website of the British Monarchy announced recently that a new member of will be appointed to the Order of the Garter, Air Chief Marshal The Right Honourable The Lord Stirrip, GCB, AFC, ADC. He will be given the rank of Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
The order was founded in 1348 by King Edward III but the Complete Peerage was first instituted on the 23rd of April 1344. It currently stands as the highest order of chivalry within the United Kingdom. The Order of the Garter is extremely exclusive and is limited to only the Sovereign, Prince of Wales and 24 companion members.
The Lord Stirrup is a former Chief of the Defense staff and has been appointed as all new members are, through The Queen’s gift which means without the permission or advice of the Prime Minister or Government.
