Following a substantial earthquake on the 5th of February a tsunami of 0.9m hit the Solomon Islands and caused devastating damage and loss of life. The wave destroyed at least 50 homes as they hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island.
Following the disaster, Her Majesty The Queen issued the following statement to the people of the Solomon islands:
I was saddened to hear of the loss of life caused by the tsunami that hit
Solomon Islands on Wednesday. Prince Philip and I send our heartfelt sympathy to those families who have lost loved ones. Our prayers and thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this disaster.
The Solomon Islands is a small country (with a 2011 population of 552,257) made up of a number of tiny islands which The Queen acts as head of state in the country’s constitutional monarchy.
